Two Old African Proverbs: (1) A Child Belongs to Everyone (2) It Takes a Whole Village to Raise a Child

CHAPTER 11  Do people know the day on which they are going to die? Do they wake up in the morning with a heightened sense of impending doom? Do they feel different in some way from the many other days of their lives? Do they feel more alert and more aware or maybe less alert and less aware? Grandma Teresa awoke on the 7th of August and, like all the other days since her grandsons had come to live with her, she felt happy. She was a slight woman with frail bones, due not so much to old age as to a poor diet, accompanied by years of anorexia nervosa, when she was younger. She was what many would call a woman of lingering beauty. At fifty-nine she still looked ‘catwalk’ striking, yet gracefully fragile. What Grandma Teresa lacked in her physical body, she made up for in her strong will and determination to help people. Her life over the past fifty-nine years held painful and joyful memories. The death of two young children from drug and alcohol abuse and the incarceration of a third child were the cause of the many furrows on her face. This was closely followed by the squandering of her mass fortune by two of her five husbands and the death of her first husband, her first love, an honest, hard working man, whom she always regretted divorcing. She could hear her grandsons and their friends talking in the adjacent room and smiled. Not only did she enjoy their company, for the first time in a long while she had people that took care...

An Old Post Revisited – The Macbeth Story

The Macbeth Story: For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his soul Matthew 16 verse 26 Most people know the story of Macbeth written by William Shakespeare. They have either read the book at school like I did when I was younger or they have seen the movie like I did recently. Some people say that Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s tragedies. I say that Macbeth had two choices and he made the wrong one. To me, the witches symbolise words that can be sown into either good or bad soil and in the case of Macbeth according to Shakespeare they were sown into bad soil. So here is a basic summary of the story: Duncan is the reigning king of Scotland. There is a battle, Macbeth, and his fellow officer Banquo are victorious despite there being many casualties on all sides. They meet some witches on the moor who tell Macbeth that he is going to be the Thane of Cawdor and then the King of Scotland. They also tell Banquo that although he would never be king he would beget a line of Scottish kings, meaning that his descendants would be kings. Not long after King Duncan has the current Thane of Cawdor killed because of treason and sends some men to give the title of Thane of Cawdor to Macbeth on the battlefield. This obviously sets Macbeth on the path of thinking that if the first thing predicted by the witches has come true, maybe the next would soon follow. (Point to note here, Macbeth didn’t betray anyone to...

Chapter 2 – Truths, Lies And Untold Secrets

CHAPTER 2   March 1859 The railroad gets stronger and more and more people are escaping to the North and beyond to Canada. I have to be careful because there are spies everywhere. Mr. and Mrs. Williamson and their two children have left us and gone to New York. Some say that Mr. Williamson must now be regarded as a traitor because he has gone to join the enemy of the South. Their house was burned to the ground yesterday and a sign placed where it had once stood that read ‘here once lived a man who is no more’. There is growing tension all around and Papa says that we may soon have to move somewhere safer as he does not trust what is happening all around us. Mama wants us to go to Papa’s cousin in France. Papa has refused, he is the Church Minister for this area and he feels he cannot desert the people that need his Pastoral care. There is talk between my parents of a move to the west region of Virginia. This idea has not been dismissed and indeed a move may take place very soon. It is not too far from Papa’s parishioners and I hear an area not so severe, not so ponderous, in its decrees.   February 1860 I have tried to write regularly in my journal for many months but with very little success. For some peculiar reason it has pressed strongly upon my heart to do so now. I hold no delusions of grandeur with regard my writing skills for I know that I am not much of a writer. Mama says my talking skills far outweigh my writing skills but I...

Truths, Lies And Untold Secrets

All things work together for the good of those who love the Lord, those who have been called according to His purpose. Romans 8 verse 28. These are powerful words and today, as my father, the minister, preached them with such passion, I was convinced to an extent. For somehow, when you have seen a vision of hell on the faces of the people you love, like I have, you wonder what your purpose is, you wonder if you have indeed really been called. This is nearly the fourth year of the war between the Union of the North and us in the South. In the past months, many people have lost their families, homes, and livelihoods. We have been fortunate indeed and have not suffered much loss. Papa says we should be thankful yet more vigorous in our attempts to help our brothers in the North free the slaves. All around me I see hate on the faces of people that I have known nearly all my life. This hate is so fierce, yet it seems to have no source or reason, but just is. I am told that ‘Love Destroys Hate.’ Many nights I have lain awake wondering if this is true. In the midst of all this hate and darkness, can a light be seen? Will love claim its victory? Will the people who come after us understand why, as people who profess to love God—brother had to fight brother to free our brothers? I hope they will because I am living in this era and as God is my witness I cannot. Now,...
